How to Get Real Twitter SEO Benefits for Your Business

By now you know that Twitter has been everywhere for the last two years touted as “The Latest and the Greatest” for social media users and businesses. What is not asked, however, is ‘How can your SEO benefit from Twitter?’ There is no clear answer. Let’s first see why that is below.

First, the links you place in your Tweets are automatically classified as ‘NoFollow’ links. That means search engines don’t give any link credit to the page or site you link to. So those links add nothing to your off-site SEO.

Whether your link uses the real URL or is the result of one of the link shortening services. They are all ‘NoFollow’, so you can’t create any SEO from Tweet links. That also means other Twitter users can’t pass on any SEO benefits to you if they link to your site in their Tweets. It’s just the way it is. However, that’s not the whole story of what your SEO can and cannot get from Twitter.

The SEO benefits you can get from Twitter

There are still ways to get Twitter search engine optimization benefits. For example, start by appearing in Twitter directories. Those listings will give you an actual ‘Follow’ link to your Twitter profile. Many Twitter directories also provide you with a link to their website. A couple of places that give you both links and are well indexed by Google are Twibs and TweetFind. Use them, use them.

Another way to get search engine benefits: Google sometimes shows Tweets in its search results. How do you get Google to display yours? It’s not easy to get there, but a few tips to make it more likely:

– Use key phrases for which you want to be displayed in your Tweets
– Try to get your message across in your Tweets and leave some space free. This is so that if others retweet them, you don’t lose any keywords due to lack of space once the RT is added.
– Google gives preference to tweets from accounts with a higher number of followers.
– Don’t tweet too often, as search engines might see it as spam. If you’re one of those people who uses Twitter as an IM, you may want to have a personal Twitter account for ‘discussion’ and a separate business Twitter account.
– Twitter indexes keywords with the added hashtag for that keyword phrase, which could almost be beneficial in Google as well.

Lastly, tweeting the new content you’ve added to your blog or website could bring SEO benefits in the future. Although the Twitter link is ‘NoFollow’, if your followers find the content beneficial, they may link to it from your blog or somewhere else that provides SEO value.

Twitter is one of those areas that doesn’t necessarily have direct, measurable SEO benefits, but those indirect rewards are still very much worth seeking out. Why wouldn’t you try to get every possible advantage in this competitive world?
