In Fear I Trust: Game Review

If you’re a fan of horror games or point-and-click adventure games (or both), you may have heard of “In Fear I Trust” by Chillingo and the Black Wing Foundation. It’s for iOS and it’s an App Store editor’s pick at this time. But is it as good as it sounds?

There are a lot of cool things in the game. The Unreal 3D graphics really immerse you in the game, as well as the excellent soundtrack filled with spooky sound effects and eerie voice acting.

For the controls, you are given two levers and tap to move. They can be used in unison or you can turn one of them off in settings. It is up to you which one you are most comfortable using.

Puzzles play a small but significant role in the game. The puzzles are sometimes easy and sometimes challenging. But it is more of an atmospheric exploration game than a puzzle game. Clues are shown through a sixth sense called Retrospective Vision. Hindsight also makes it easy to find any items that have been lost along the way.

Now this may all sound great to you. However, the game also has a lot of bugs. I had to restart the game several times due to game-breaking bugs. This makes what should be a fun experience, rather than a very frustrating experience. However, there are ways around this if you are willing to give them a try. I did manual backups, which allowed me to complete the game.

Once you get past the bugs, it’s a great game, especially if you’re into dark psychological thrillers.

The story is told through scraps of paper, notes, diary excerpts, interviews, as well as audio recordings and cut scenes. There are also some apparitions, ghosts from the past whose conversations you can listen to.

As of now, there are only two episodes for $ 2.99, but more will be released for free (a total of 5 episodes). Bugs are also being worked on, so if you’re unsure about buying it, you can wait until they release an update.

But if you can get past the bugs using manual backups and don’t mind the added hassle, it’s a game worth playing. Voice acting is my favorite part. I just wish I could play the audio clips whenever I want.

Games like this are rare on the Apple App Store, so I hope this one succeeds and we will see more of these in the future.
