How to cut lattice panels

You can use lattice panels to extend your existing fence, section out your patio or garden, or make a privacy corner within your garden. You can also create a nice decorative effect with the lattice panels. Choosing lattice allows you to enjoy the refreshing natural flow of air.

Lattice comes in 4-by-8-foot and 2-by-8-foot lattice panels. PVC and wood are the most common for lattice panels. They could be easily installed when you know how to cut them.

Here are some tips to help you finish your project successfully.

1. Measurements

It is crucial to take accurate measurements for the project, especially the width. This ensures that the lattice panels fit properly on the support posts and frame. If the area that requires framing is not square, additional cuts will be necessary to make the panels fit properly. Make sure there is 1/4 inch of clearance on all sides of the lattice panels to accommodate contraction and expansion.

When installing in level areas, you must cut the panels according to the slope of the floor. Alternatively, cut the lattice panels with a couple inch margin that could extend into the ground. Make a chalk line to mark the cutting line.

2. Remove the staples

The panels have many staples that help keep them in place. Get rid of any staples that may be along the cut line. Use a screwdriver for this to minimize the number of small pieces of staple that fly off while cutting.

3. Tools

To cut the lattice panels to size, use an electric saw (a fine-toothed hard saw or circular saw). It is best to attach a carbide-tipped wood blade to the electric wood lattice saw. This will allow you to easily cut the staples from your panels. It also enables you to cut efficiently and precisely.

4. Cut

Make sure the “front” side of the louver is facing up when using a fine tooth saw. But the “back” side must be up when using a rotary saw. To prevent the material from cracking or chipping, it is important to cut at a constant rate. When you come to the end of each cut, be sure to provide firm support to the panel, especially at the cut line. If the louver is not held firmly, it may break or split.

5. Protective equipment

Small pieces of material and sparks can be shot out when cutting the panels. This is why it is important to wear protective glasses to protect your eyes. Gloves are a good idea too.
