traveling with a puggle

Are you planning a vacation away from home and wondering how your dog will adjust to the trip? If you have a Puggle, you don’t have to worry. In addition to their other endearing characteristics, Puggles are calm and gentle dogs that travel well whether by car, plane, train, or ship. All you need to do is make sure your Puggle has been trained and conditioned to accept the restriction that travel will place on it.

o Puggles adapt to new places more easily than many other dog breeds, so their reaction to travel, new surroundings and places, and perhaps being away from their owner for a while should not be excessive. However, each dog has its own temperament, and if your Puggles is on the excitable side, consult a vet about giving him a sedative before the trip begins.
o The best way to travel with a Puggle, as with any dog, is by crating it. Lightweight plastic travel boxes with carrying handles are readily available. Just make sure it’s the right size. It should be big enough for your dog to get up and turn around, but not so big that it’s hard for you to handle.
o Although your Puggle may be used to his normal crate at home, he needs to get used to the new travel crate. Have him acclimate to it slowly, the same way you acclimated him to his starter map.
o Take him for a short ride in the travel crate to get him used to the fact that this crate is for going out.
o The next step is to take him to new places in the box, so he understands that traveling in the box means new environments.
o Then start leaving him alone in the crate (perhaps at a friend’s house) for increasing periods of time. Your Puggle needs to understand that when you travel you may not be able to be with him all the time.
o And finally, gradually get him used to other people (again ask your friends for help) carrying him in the crate. This will happen when he is on the road and he needs to be conditioned to it.
o Puggles have a tendency to bark and your dog may start barking in his travel crate. Remember that this is not bad behavior but nervousness and treat it firmly but lovingly.
o Remember that when you travel, your Puggle may have to be in his crate longer than you or he would like. Be sure to take him for a walk an hour before he goes into the crate and again right before you put him in the crate. Giving him two chances to do his “Business” will reduce the chance of him messing up the box.
o Keeping the water in the box is a balancing act. Spill proof bowls are available for travel applications. You don’t want your Puggle to be thirsty in her cage. But remember that what goes in must come out and if he drinks in his cage he will have to “go” sooner than if he is not given water for a while.
