Top Ten Uses of Portland Cement

When you decide to start building your home, one of the most important considerations is the cement that would be used. In fact, the most common type of cement used around the world is Portland cement. The main reason for this widespread worldwide use is in fact its composition. Composed of concrete, mortar, stucco and grout, it is produced as a fine powder by grinding Portland cement clinker with calcium sulfate. The origins of cement go back to the early years of the 19th century. Portland cement has found its way today as a basic ingredient for ready-mix concrete. This adoption has been carried out only after having successfully tested and recognized the fact that it creates a strong bond compared to early concrete production techniques. With the ever-increasing importance attached to them, Portland cement, especially that in ready-mix concrete, can be used for the following uses:

Applications-

  1. The most important use of Portland cement is the production of concrete. It plays a fundamental role in the setting and hardening of concrete.
  2. When mixed with other aggregates, Portland cement begins to serve a dual purpose. One, it provides concrete products to be workable when wet and Two, it provides durable when dry.
  3. It is widely used by retaining walls and precast concrete block walls as a main component to build a solid concrete foundation.
  4. By mixing it with water, Portland cement literally turns into a plastic stone and therefore can be used for purposes and in places where stone would be used and that too while staying within financial limits.
  5. It can be molded into a tough, fire-retardant material that can also be used in the design of buildings, production plants, warehouses, and other foundations.
  6. Any type of iron or wood structure is exposed to corrosion, either by air or by water. But with a concrete shell, made of Portland cement, they can be effectively protected.
  7. Any structure that is intended to support large amounts of weight will bring Portland cement to use. These structures range from ground floors of multi-story buildings to floors of bridges and from spans of bridges to dams.
  8. Due to its ability to prevent corrosion, it is also used in ships, tanks, and bunkers.
  9. A fire or devastating blaze can leave a completely burned structure, but with the use of Portland cement, this can be prevented.
  10. It is also used in mortars, plasters, screeds and grouts as a material that can be compressed into voids to consolidate structures.

The use of Portland cements has allowed the production of galvanized ready-mix concrete. Due to the prominence attributed to them, these cements are said to have already been made and left their mark.
